TRANSPORTATION IN THE UPPER WEST SIDE

At nearly every corner there is a bus or subway stop with a direct connection to the rest of the city. Local buses, mostly operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), have five routes that travel throughout the neighborhood or to other parts of the city. Subway stations are also conveniently located and run local or express trains in two distinct subway lines. The 1, 2, and 3 line, otherwise known as the IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line, runs along Broadway. Along Central Park West run the A, B, C, and D trains (IND Eighth Avenue Line). The main corridor for drivers is the six-lane West Side Highway which borders the Hudson River and stretches south from West 72nd street to edge of NYC.

SCHOOLS IN THE UPPER WEST SIDE

One of the best reasons to live in the Upper West Side is the excellent schools. Many families take pride in the neighborhood’s highly rated public schools and distinguished private schools. The Upper West Side students repeatedly rank at the top of the charts for citywide test scores in Math and English. Overall, there are 65 primary and secondary schools which are divided among two Manhattan districts, NYC Geog District #2 and NYC Geog District 3.

Along with the core curriculum, the neighborhood’s excellent schools often feature programs that integrate art and technology, dual languages, socio-emotional development, and community strength. There are a wide variety of institutions to choose from such as The Music Academy, Montessori schools, religious schools, options for gifted students, and schools that specially serve students with disabilities. The Upper West Side is also home to many higher education campuses such as Columbia University and The Julliard School.

NIGHT LIFE IN THE UPPER WEST SIDE

Although the Upper West Side is known for its laid-back vibe, there is a lively entertainment and nightlife scene. Some of New York’s finest venues for live performances can be found here such as the Beacon Theatre and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. There are also plenty of places to grab a drink, whether you are looking for the local hot spot or a more relaxed environment. The Dead Poet is the neighborhood Irish bar where you can enjoy signature literary styled drinks. The Manhattan Cricket Club is a great place to check out which is an old speakeasy above the restaurant Burke & Wills.
