Once lacking in a sufficient amount of transportation options through the city to and from the Upper East Side, the neighborhood has transformed itself into a veritable transit hub. The recently added Second Avenue subway, the first phase of which was unveiled in January of 2017, provides access via the Q train to stops on East 96th Street, East 86th Street, East 72nd Street, and the 63rd Street/Lexington Avenue station. This line heads downtown through major locations such as Times Square, Herald Square, Union Square, and NYU, and then on to Brooklyn. The Upper East Side also has the M86 Select Bus Service, which was added in 2015 to ease the pain of connecting to the Upper West Side, running along 86th Street through Central Park. In addition, the neighborhood is serviced mainly by the 4, 5, and 6 trains to Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and The Bronx. There are several buses running through the Upper East Side, connecting you to every area of Manhattan with ease.
